Kendal's Column: Prejudice against the internet?

We have all heard the horror stories of the internet- meeting people who turn out to be peodophiles, leaked photos, personal information spread, fraud and viruses to name just a handful of the dangers that ARE out there.
However, the internet is, the majority of the time, a great place to be. As long as you are careful, there is no reason why you can't make friends online as it is a great way to find people who are into the same things that you like.
Over recent days, and in other cases in the past, the internet has proven it can be more than 'a good thing'. It has proven itself to be a lifesaving thing.

The Boston Marathon.
Two bombs are set off at the finish line.
Camera's everywhere. The news broadcasts it. People talk.
When the bombs set off in Boston I was scrolling along my twitter feed and straight after the first tweet about it an AVALANCHE of tweets about staying safe, where not to go, how to try and locate people advice from police, how to donate blood and advice from officials followed. The hashtag #PrayForBoston became Worldwide #1 topic in minutes as the news spread. The fact that so many people have twitter and so many people were tweeting about it probably means that multiple families were reunited with runners faster, urgently needed blood donations were received probably meaning lives saved.
We will never know if anyone else may have died if there hadn't been such a quick response from everybody- from the police to the internet.

I don't understand how some people can say [all] people on the internet are conniving, scheming people living in a basement. NOT EVERYONE IS EVIL. There is no reason to hate anyone/anything if you haven't experienced anything bad. The news picks out the worst of the world. People on the internet are normal and care for each other as well as what is going on around them. I have met some of the most amazing people on social networks. Make sure you have the whole story before you generalize.

The Boston marathon was a huge tragedy and the investigation has found 2 suspects, to my knowledge, so far. I sincerely wish and hope that the people that caused so much pain are brought a swift justice for the families of those who have lost.

This Post has been a bit scattered but i wanted to talk about a few things so incase you missed any
the boston marathon-  I know it sounds cliche, but my heart is with you.
generalization that the internet is a negative thing
the internet helps and can spread news faster than other media.
I am not denying that it has its hiccups but ,when it comes down to it, the internet helps people.

Happy Friday!
